About this listen

From the New York Times best-selling author of Chasing the Scream, a radically new way of thinking about depression and anxiety.

What really causes depression and anxiety - and how can we really solve them? Award-winning journalist Johann Hari suffered from depression since he was a child and started taking antidepressants when he was a teenager. He was told that his problems were caused by a chemical imbalance in his brain. As an adult, trained in the social sciences, he began to investigate whether this was true - and he learned that almost everything we have been told about depression and anxiety is wrong.

Across the world, Hari found social scientists who were uncovering evidence that depression and anxiety are not caused by a chemical imbalance in our brains. In fact, they are largely caused by key problems with the way we live today. Hari's journey took him from a mind-blowing series of experiments in Baltimore, to an Amish community in Indiana, to an uprising in Berlin.

Once he had uncovered nine real causes of depression and anxiety, they led him to scientists who are discovering seven very different solutions - ones that work. It is an epic journey that will change how we think about one of the biggest crises in our culture today.

Editorial reviews

This groundbreaking study of depression urges listeners to rethink what they know about mental health issues and reconsider how they are treated.

In Lost Connections, Johann Hari unpacks a distressing statistic: cases of anxiety and depression have been steadily on the rise since the 1980s, when he was diagnosed with depression as a teen. Curious as to why so many others in the Western world were also suffering from depression and anxiety and frustrated by the actions of the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry, Hari sets out to find the real cause of the mounting mental health crisis. He asks questions of himself and society at large, navigating the psychological and environmental factors that can generate such painful feelings of disconnection.

Drawing conclusions from observations of different communities and lifestyles, this listen reveals that the stressors and loneliness of modern life may have more of an impact than you might think. Having battled such demons himself, Hari narrates his own audiobook with a sense of hard-won perspective that adds an element of powerful poignancy. Heavily researched and compelling, Lost Connections offers brand new insight on a critical subject matter.

Timely and well-researched

I was very glad to find Johann Hari taking on the brain-chemistry model of depression and anxiety, which has been used to sell masses of drugs over the years. Hari alone with not stop this, but he will at least make lots of people think before they take yet another anti-depressant - and as he discovered, these can work for a certain period, or very well for some people. I appreciate Hari's urging us to look at social and personal causes first - making changes in these big areas could be highly disruptive of course, but in the end prove to be the only effective fixer. I enjoyed his reading of the book, but got a bit bored with all those surveys, while recognizing their importance to the story. On the whole I found the audio book most enlightening.

Refreshing and brilliant

Really enjoyed learning and unlearning about depression and it’s causes. I feel hopeful that more research and projects will take place to explore the opportunities of non medical anti-depressants and give us all an understanding of the tools we need to live happier more connected lives.

Excellent and backed by research

I was engrossed from the start, Hari is excellent when reading and this is one of the few non fiction books I have listened to from start to finish. He continues his exploration of how connection to each other and our environment has significantly impacted upon our mental health. Specifically that while medication is important, many mental health professionals focus solely on the medication side rather than the fact that no organism is independent of its environment and it is our environment that must also be taken into account when looking at the causes of depression.

Highly recommended and certainly fills in the holes regarding why the “pills” on their own without taking into account the impact of our environment and life trauma will never be enough. This is a positive book that asks us to look at the whole person and their environmental circumstances when considering depression rather than just the “chemical imbalance” theory of depression. A great book, well narrated and thought provoking.

Epic book, mirrors my lack of faith in the 'chemical imbqlance' theory of depression, yet goes so far beyond to offer realistic solutions and practical steps. amazing book

Mandatory

I believe this book should be mandatory reading in year 10. This is the time when teenagers need understanding and truth. These are also the teenagers who will grow up and run countries. Hopefully after reading this book countries will be run as equals and by love. Imagine what a world we would wake up to each day if this happened.

Got understanding of how to prioritise over ego

At times I felt that the supporting information about where related research was a bit too heavy but Johann hit the balance as it's needed in order to convey the understanding and also invites you to question any single portion of his message.
I found this book to be empowering in a way different to a self help book typically does by pumping self belief which can be challenged, and more in a genuine understanding of the origin and the balance of the ego vs connection.
Highly recommended

Eye Opener

As someone with a long family history of depression and anxiety this book has filled in so many gaps as to what I've felt and experienced.

The book is very easy to listen to while still being very specific and informative.

Its opened my eyes to how my decisions have inadvertently affected me and understanding the positive and negative influences of this on my mental health and the people around me.

Whether you are someone trying to understand your on mental health, wanting to help someone that is struggling with depression or anxiety or simply looking at ways to foster a happy life, I highly recommend this book.

You may not personally suffer from mental ill health, but I guarantee you know someone who does, even if you don't know it. Please listen to this book as a way to understand yourself, the humans around you, the society we have collectively created. I wish everyone would read this book and take on the message. It would change everything.
