Publisher's Summary
New York Times Audio best seller | Amazon Editor's pick | Audible Editor's pick
After more than 500 years of exile, the heir to the empyre is wary about his sudden reassignment to active duty on the Goblin War’s front lines. His mission to rescue an outpost leads to a dead-end canyon deep inside enemy territory, and his suspicion turns to dread when he discovers the stronghold doesn't exist. But whoever went to the trouble of planning his death to look like a casualty of war didn't know he would be assigned to the Seventh Sikaria Auxiliary Squadron. In the depths of an unforgiving jungle, a legend is about to be born, and the world of Elan will never be the same.
From Michael J. Sullivan, the New York Times, USA Today, and Washington Post best-selling author, a new adventure begins with the first book in The Rise and Fall trilogy. Although this series is set in the same world as the Riyria novels and the Legends of the First Empire books, it is a stand-alone tale. As such, no prior knowledge of the other works is required to enjoy this tale to its fullest.

Listen to the Age of Myth books first
I listened to this twice. First was awhile ago, before I listened to the Age of Myth books. It was a jumble of hints and names I couldn’t reconcile. I listened to the Age of books then this one again and it was much better. Not as good as the other series, but better than the first listen.

Okay - not my favourite
The story is mostly told from the perspectives of the first two half human and half Fhrey people, Nolyn son of Nyphron and Persephone and Sephryn daughter of Tekchin and Moya. Whilst it was interesting to learn their story and the challenges they face in this book, there did not seem to be a lot of depth to either character and they felt like copies of other characters to a point. Seems a bit repetitive but I guess a major theme is that history repeats itself and characters need to ask themselves how much are they like their parents (especially when those parents are of two races). The Riyria Revelations were just so good, I have been a bit spoiled and Sulivans other series Legends and perhaps this one are just not going to come close - perhaps a lot of it is to do with characterisation or creating something different - how can that be done really well when one is giving the worldbuilding backstory myth legend and history of how we get to the world of The Riyria Revelations? It's tricky. I'm on to the next book in the series and am sure I will enjoy it as I did this - especially with T Gerald Reynolds still narrating the audio books- but maybe won't be adding any to the favourites shelf- we will see!

Predictable
I’ve enjoyed books by this author before and enjoyed them immensely. This fell short as the story line was largely predictable.

Can’t get into the story
I really enjoyed reading the Legends of the First Empire books, and thought to finish the Rise and Fall before moving to Riyria series.
So far, this is my least favourite book from Michael J Sullivan. I’ve reached chapter 21 waiting for the story to get somewhere and now am thinking why bother finishing.
