2011年３月11日。東日本大震災は鉄道にも大きな被害を与えた。地震そのものの被害以上に、津波によって町ごと駅も線路も押し流されてしまったところも多かった。さらに首都圏の交通マヒという２次災害も招いた。
だが、人々は負けてはいなかった。壊滅的な被害を受けたにもかかわらず、「被災者の足に」と５日後に一部運転を再開した三陸鉄道。被災した鉄道の代わりに人々を運んだ飛行機やバス。迂回ルートで物資輸送に貢献したＪＲ貨物・・・。
