About this listen

A New York Times, Esquire and Economist Book of the Year.

Love, desire, intimacy - we all know what these are meant to look like. But what happens when they descend into violence?

Award-winning journalist Rachel Louise Snyder once believed all the common misconceptions about domestic violence: that it happen to an unlucky few; that it’s a matter of poor choices; that if things are dire enough, victims will leave. Her perception changed when she began talking to the victims and perpetrators whose stories she tells in this book.

Fearlessly reporting from the front lines of what the WHO has deemed a ‘global epidemic’, Snyder interviews men who have murdered their families, women who have nearly been murdered and a range of professionals in advocacy and law enforcement, painting a vivid and nuanced picture of what happens when relationships go badly wrong. The problem is on the rise: an average of 137 women are killed by familial violence worldwide every day. Two women die at the hands of their partners each week in the UK. In the US, domestic homicides have increased by 32 percent since 2017. And in South Africa, a woman is now killed every three hours. No Visible Bruises tells the intimate stories behind these headlines, and lays out the society-wide changes that are urgently needed to stop domestic violence in its tracks.

Heartbreaking

This book is beautifully written and the stories are heartbreaking. Thought provoking and inspiring, and after reading this no one will ever again ask ‘why didn’t she just leave him?’. I really enjoyed the author’s narration and the detailed story-telling style.

Stories that need to be heard!

I think this book was fantastic overall & these stories need to be told. I enjoyed how she covered it from so many sides, victims, abusers, families, prisons, community workers, advocates, etc. I learned a lot about the system & different viewpoints.

I really wish she'd covered more about emotional abuse, as the title of the book infers that with "No Visible Bruises", where clearly most of these women and men on each side of DV she discusses are either beaten/sexually assaulted and many eventually murdered. Not all victims get physically hit and many survivors (including myself) would say after being abused physically & emotionally, the emotional was FAR worse over time.

I found it hard to follow in audio format due to the author constantly talking about different people. She'd switch back and forth or start a different story about a different person whilst in the middle of telling another's story. I had to go back multiple times and see where I missed the introduction of this new name. I think she probably took for granted SHE knew who she was talking about but hearing 50+ names of different people in one book with little context is very challenging.

Honest, empowering, life saving.

This author, if she hasn't already, should be given a nobel book prize. Incredibly eye opening while remaining unbiased and respectful. Must Listen/Read!
