About this listen
Cult horror director Stanislas Cordova hasn't been seen in public since 1971. When his daughter Ashley is found dead in a believed suicide, journalist Scott McGrath is not convinced. For McGrath, another death connected to the legendary director seems more than a coincidence. Driven by revenge, curiosity and a need for the truth, he finds himself pulled into a hypnotic, disorientating world which begins to threaten his grip on reality.

Like being guided through a horror house maze
What a great joyride to this immersive blend of “reality” and imagination, a mellow roller coaster ride in which you’re steadily chugging along awaiting the climb that preludes the drop, something you keep wondering when will arrive. I love how she created this world where the manic obsession people tend to gather surrounding reclusive genius and strange protectiveness they tend to have with their versions of who these geniuses are meant to be without ever really knowing what/who they are truly worshiping. I love the dark backdrop of New York and its’ many strange paths that it can lead you down. It reminded me of watching Eyes Wide Shut and Ninth Gate or reading Silence of the Lambs. If you enjoy them, you might enjoy this too. Her attention to details of his investigations is also noteworthy especially with the scenes including Cleo in the magic shop.
The narrator did such an amazing work at bringing the lead character McGrath in to life, telling the stories within the story with such ease that it was very enjoyable to hear him tell those tales from other characters throughout the book.

hauntingly beautiful
unexpectedly addictive. I listened to this audiobook on recommendation from a friend. They said I lived there, in this book. after completing it I can confirm my life feels like night film. mesmerising, like a daytime nightmare. on the precipice between consciousness and sleep.
