About this listen

In this beautiful and transformative book, 24 Māori academics share their personal journeys, revealing what being Māori has meant for them in their work. Their perspectives provide insight for all New Zealanders into how mātauranga is positively influencing the Western-dominated disciplines of knowledge in the research sector. It is a shameful fact, says co-editor Jacinta Ruru in her introduction to Nga Kete Mātauranga, that in 2020, only about five percent of academic staff at universities in Aotearoa New Zealand are Māori. Tertiary institutions have for the most part been hostile places for Indigenous students and staff, and this book is an important call for action.

"It is well past time that our country seriously commits to decolonising the tertiary workforce, curriculum and research agenda," writes Professor Ruru.

Kaa Rawe! Ngaa mihi nunui ki a koutou katoa.

Many thanks to you all so much for this text. I can resonate with the experiances of many of you having a degree in Environmental Management myself and having studied and worked in the local government space over the past decade and a half. I don't have enough words to thank you for this wonderful contribution. Totally Inspiring!! Tino miharo rawa a tu tenei pukepuka, Tena koutou.

Ko tēnei pukapuka he taonga

This book is a vital piece of reading (or listening) for all Māori and non-Māori in the research world. As a honours student with an undergraduate background in Psychology and Māori Studies who has been taught by a number of these authors at Waipapa Taumata Rau, this is an invaluable piece of literature that allows all up and coming Māori scholars to honour the tuākana, whaea, matua, kaiako etc. who have paved the way for us. I cannot thank the authors enough for their contribution to both their respective areas of study and research, but also their contribution to Māori excellence. It is vital that tauira see themselves reflected in academia and that is what this book provides. I cannot recommend this book enough. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa mō tēnei taonga

Simply Incredible

I am of Maori Descent & I am displeased to say that I have no idea about my heritage. This book has inspired me beyond words to discover where I have come from and how I can contribute.

This is the best 12 hours of my life to date. I am in fact about to press play for the second time!

The authors and narrators of this audio book are simply remarkable in their academics, wealth of knowledge and lived experiences. I feel so privileged to listen like never before. Such a fantastic and highly recommended audio book.

Although I am in my 40’s you have all inspired me to go back to Uni to engage in Maori Studies. Seemingly what I have known about the Maori culture is completely incorrect!

Words cannot express my gratitude for what you have all shared.

Endless Blessings to you all xx
