excellent review
I absolutely loved this course. Easy to follow and I recommend highly to anyone planning next steps in Mandarin. I love the way it builds upon prior learning and has just the right amount of repetition.

Best this when you are driving.
The method Paul Nobel uses in both of his mandarin courses are very useful and easy to follow, I already knew some mandarin but, with his audio books it really helped me consolidate how to construct sentences more effectively. Also, best way to learn if you have a busy life style, if you are driving, running or just doing house work you can learn this language. I was even able to use some of what is shared in this series at my job with customers who didn't speak much English. Would recommend this to anyone who wants to begin learning mandarin.

I can speak Chinese!!!! 我会说中文!
So I purchased this book about five weeks ago and I got to the end last week. Another fantastic job, Paul and Kai-Ti! I listened to it while commuting, and some of that was riding a bike. I can't tell you how much pressure it puts on when you're slogging it up a hill, breathing hard, and Paul's in your ear saying, "So how do you say, 'If I were you, I'd go to that restaurant because their dishes are tasty'?" Aaaaargh!!!
So I'm now able to converse a little with the Chinese speaking people in my small town. I'm still very nervous, but the Mandarin is actually working. It's very strange and very exciting to be able to use what I've learned in a natural setting.
Paul's method is based on repetition, and carefully building new concepts on a familiar foundation. In this book he explains how to speak in past and future tenses, how to ask specific questions, how to use 'if' and 'because' etc. As you can see, his focus is NOT on extensive vocabulary. It's on language structure. I think this method is highly useful; there's no sense memorising vocabulary and phrases if you can't 'plug it into' sentence structure.
Highly Recommended.

the best starting point I could find
this book was very good for learning the basics for mandarin Chinese. the only problem is that as you get more advanced and listen to it over and over again the descriptions can feel a bit dragged out and repetitive. but in retrospect it was a good thing because after finishing this book It took me 4 audiobooks to find something as good to advance with. so from here I would recommend going onto innovative language gengo Chinese. I would definitely avoid pimsleur audiobooks and learn mandarin in 10 lessons to success another bad one is learn in your car mandarin terrible.. in short these books are good if you have time to go over them again and again which I did. so a good overall experience
