About this listen

In one of the most acclaimed novels of recent years, Kazuo Ishiguro imagines the lives of a group of students growing up in a darkly skewed version of contemporary England.

Narrated by Kathy, now 31, Never Let Me Go dramatizes her attempts to come to terms with her childhood at the seemingly idyllic Hailsham School and with the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends in the wider world. A story of love, friendship, and memory, Never Let Me Go is charged throughout with a sense of the fragility of life.

Stunningly beautiful book

What a stunning and haunting book. This story stayed with me for ages, and the simplicity and matter-of-fact narration really helped to emphasise the banality of evil in this storyline. Wonderful, and highly recommended. A fabulous listen, I will definitely revisit this text.

Silently horrifying and gut wrenching

The frank normalisation of the most horrifying realities is deeply upsetting and so masterfully executed and it’s so well intergrated into an aggressively mundane and psychologically disturbed childhood.

An interesting and thought provoking read.

Had to read this for uni and was so happy to find it on audible. A really good story that you don’t want to stop listening to. It also provokes thoughts about the future and dangers of cloning.

Slice of life

Reminiscent, melancholic, slice of life - all in collection towards random moments of childhood, adolescence and adulthood shaping the prospect of loss and fading friendships.

Characters just not rational

I can see what is meant by this book but that doesn't save it.
It is what is not said in dialogue and narration that gets so damned annoying. Similarly with Klara and the Sun. (Klara was less annoying, "Remains of the Day" made retraint the whole point - so it gets a pass).
I kept finding myself thinking why would you say that, why wouldn't you do this, over and over. Like commonsense stuff - the way people actually think. If real people think like they did in this story, then perhaps people are more gullible and prone to erratic dramatic response and irrational thought than I imagine them to be.
I hate being treated like blind consumer. You create a world but I'm not going to be sympathetic if it asks too much of you to restrain from needing more anchors in the sand.

Intrigued and beautifully written

A gripping tale. I enjoyed the way small exposures slowly revealed the context and situation. Well written and the depth of the characters was beautifully portrayed.

Agonising

Imagine the most boring story you've ever heard. This booking brings boring to a new height. The concept had some potential. All it needed was believable characters, something actually happening and a good story teller. This book had none of these things.

Beautifully sad

This is such a well told story. It made me think how the context of our surroundings shape our perspectives. This felt like it could accompany “the road”.

Boring

I decided to keep listening to the end to see if anything interesting happened. However, it is certainly not a book that I would ever bother to listen to again so I am returning it. Disappointing, as I have enjoyed this author's other books.
