THE NUMBER ONE
SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER, PICKED FOR THE ZOE BALL TV BOOK CLUB

The past has a habit of tracking us down. And tripping us up.

When Kate was twenty-two, she had an intense and passionate affair with a married man, Callum, which ended in heartbreak. Kate thought she'd never get over it.

Seventeen years later, life has moved on - Kate, now a successful actress, is living in London, married to Matt and mother to little Tallulah. Meanwhile Callum and his wife Belinda are happy together, living in Edinburgh and watching their kids grow up. The past, it would seem, is well and truly behind them all.

But then Kate meets Callum again.

And they are faced with a choice: to walk away from each other . . . or to risk finding out what might have been.

Second chances are a rare gift in life. But that doesn't mean they should always be taken . . .

In her unmissable debut, actress and screenwriter Ruth Jones shows us the dangers of trying to recapture that which was once lost and failing to realise the beauty of what we already have.

'Ruth Jones is excellent on human nature and why we make the mistakes we do. I felt for every character. Unputdownable.' Jojo Moyes

Perfect for me

This review concerns Ruth Jones, the author. I warmed to you when I saw a television programme of behind the scenes at Gavin and Stacey and again on the Fortunately podcast during which you mentioned that you chose Sharon Small to narrate your debut novel as you couldn’t bear the thought of your mum listening to you narrate the intimate scenes.! You picked well...Sharon was fantastic throughout. However, those particular scenes made me smile...I could hear Nessa in my ears at that point as well! I really enjoyed this novel. Easy to listen to and gripping. The household chores got done: I couldn’t wait to plug my ears in for the next chapter. Off to buy your next novel now and to see what else Sharon has narrated. Thank you both.

Really enjoyed this novel

Loved this book. The narrator was excellent. So sad love,
so amazing and special and also so damaging and maddening.

Entertaining and enjoyable

This is a great read with plausible plot lines, well developed characters, and cleverly-placed exciting cliff-hangers. It's also something of a morality tale. The ending surprised me: after the meticulous depiction of characters, settings and emotions, I ended the book with the impression that Ruth was approaching a deadline or just got sick of it all and wrapped it all up far too quickly.

Sharon Small's narration is amazing. A narrator's attempts at accents and voices is often the downfall of an audiobook but Sharon Small does it all faultlessly.

Great read

Storyline much better than I expected from the blurb. Two main characters were hard to sympathise with ( but that’s meant to happen, I think). It took a couple of chapters for me to get used to the narrator and then adapted to her style and then I liked it. Will definitely read more of Ruth Jones.
