About this listen
The Nephilim loom over Niflheim.
Gods, Dharkan, and mortals fight amongst themselves in their shadow.
And Time is on no one's side.
The gods are outmatched, their talents useless against the Nephilim's technology. Desperate, they turn on each other. New alliances form and fall apart, for there can be no peace when survival is at stake. Psyche, torn between a goddess's duty and a mortal's hate, sets off on her own to learn the truth behind her fate, unaware of the danger following her.
Meanwhile, Chronos's own agenda involves a power so dangerous and unpredictable it's been long forsaken by both the gods and the Nephilim.
Will it be worth the risk?

A twist-filled story, with complex characters
Nephilim's Hex is an excellent book and while it keeps up with many of the details of the prior books, it finally ties many threads together to bring us to an explosive cliffhanger of an ending--more proof that Imaginario has mastered cliffhangers. Like before, this is not YA or NA, and not a retelling or rehash--but a complete reimagining of what could have happened to mythology beings outside Earth.
On the one hand, it repeats a similar structure to the prior books, with Butterfly and Aiden narrating in first person, and the others in third person. I love this dynamic, especially because all narrators are quite biased, but the first-person ones are more biased, leaving the reader with the knowledge that we can't really trust any character's opinions or actions.
Nevertheless, this book booms with merging plotlines, conflicting interests, and new characters; I want to elaborate a bit more on this.
Starting with characters (and trying to keep this spoiler-free) you have the regulars from the prior books, but there are also a bunch of new additions, some which completely perturb the feigned balance, bringing forth a sequence of revelations that plunge the plot into a rollercoaster. The existing characters gain far more depth here, as we start seeing facets that were only hinted at before, but now really show us their true colours... or something akin to it.
I think that the author's approach to revealing these facets and contradictions in the characters adds depth, but it also builds up that these are mythological gods and hence don't have straightforward nor human-like mindsets. They feel different and non-human which, in a book with mythological gods and beings at its centre, is fundamental--and so well done.
That leads me to the second point, which is one of the strongest--the worldbuilding and how perfectly Imaginario tied up all the threads of plots she carefully sowed throughout the first two books. I won't go into details, but there are things in Book 1 and early Book 2 that make sense now, and the fact that it is solidly done, elegantly, and without plot-holes, speaks to the author's care and skill.
Moreover, all the time I was reading and having "aha" moments remembering the other two books and the bits of plot and hints that were seamlessly being tied up... especially because the author does a great job of weaving the reminders into the text in a way that is not disrupting but actually quite engaging.
It is full of twists and turns, showcasing quite a realistic and thus complex depiction of the conflicting interests of the many characters here. An interesting consequence is that, while the first two books were quite slowburn and quietly told, Nephilim's Hex is a sequence of increasingly shocking twists--and I loved it. It never felt overwhelming, even through by now I know there is far more. Especially after that epilogue. This series has some of the best cliffhangers I have read, and I commend the author for them.
Overall, this is the most imaginative blend of mythology I have read, and the amount of research and care put into it is palpable through the plot. Everything is so neat, so very well done--and if you know a bit of mythology, you'll find plenty of "easter eggs" and "clues" that the author sowed here and there. I never know where this story will take me, and the ride through three books has been incredibly enjoyable.
Reading the Timelessness series has been one of my bookish highlights of the year!
