About this listen

Love him or loathe him, Ned Kelly has been at the heart of Australian culture and identity since he and his gang were tracked down in bushland by the Victorian police and came out fighting, dressed in bulletproof iron armour made from farmers' ploughs.

Historians still disagree over virtually every aspect of the eldest Kelly boy's brushes with the law. Did he or did he not shoot Constable Fitzpatrick at their family home? Was he a lawless thug or a noble Robin Hood, a remorseless killer or a crusader against oppression and discrimination? Was he even a political revolutionary, an Australian republican channelling the spirit of Eureka?

Peter FitzSimons, best-selling chronicler of many of the great defining moments and people of this nation's history, is the perfect person to tell this most iconic of all Australian stories. From Kelly's early days in Beveridge, Victoria, in the mid-1800s, to the Felons' Apprehension Act, which made it possible for anyone to shoot the Kelly gang, to Ned's appearance in his now-famous armour, prompting the shocked and bewildered police to exclaim ‘He is the devil!' and ‘He is the bunyip!', FitzSimons brings the history of Ned Kelly and his gang exuberantly to life, weighing in on all of the myths, legends and controversies generated by this compelling and divisive Irish-Australian rebel.

Critic Reviews

Eureka is a great tale, a rollicking story with momentum that sweeps the reader along to the climactic explosion of violence.' ( The Australian)

Great History, great story, that voice though

I quite enjoyed the book history and details, many of which I was not aware of. It would be a great educational piece for any age studying real Australian history.

Peter and his staff really appear to do exemplary work in the researching of this book as they do for all of his work.

Not a real fan of the Narrator personally but I think that’s just a personal taste.

Fitzsimmons does ramble a bit but the story was very detailed and never boring (until the last hour or so.) It is a great listen

I thought I had a good idea who Ned Kelly was and why he did what he did

This book is near perfect. The narration, the detail, the gripping yarn style, the detail, the incredible depth of the research and the fascinating way it is stitched so lovingly together. I thought I would like this. I didn’t. I bloody well loved it. Vale Ned Kelly indeed.

excellent story very well researched

taken 5 years for me to finally get around to this account by Peter Fitzsimmons on Ned Kelly. breathtakingly well-researched and spot on in detail that has long been argued and will be for a long time.

fantastic book by Peter FitzSimons

I listened while driving from sydney-to-melbourne while stopping at various locations talked about in the book. Richard Aspel brings the story alive with his amazing voice. 10/10 I would recommend this book to anyone. The amount of research that has gone into this book is phenomenal. highly educational but not boring.

Never a dull moment

It was very interesting, fun listening to the old newspaper quotes and hearing the language used back then.
