Publisher's Summary
Mastering magic comes only with the greatest of trials....
Alec began his 18th birthday with the temple monks. By day's end, he discovers he possesses magical abilities.
Except his magic is unique. He doesn't require grimoires and incantations to cast spells. Alec's magic is entirely natural. He can, somehow, absorb the elements from objects and manipulate them according to his will. This power is incredible, but difficult to master. If he's going to learn how to use his natural magic, it'll take the tutelage of Archmage Diamondspear, one of the most adept magic users in the kingdom.
And Alec's training is not without its dangers. His abilities manifest and grow when he is in dire circumstances, and his teachers are not beyond putting Alec in the gravest of situations if it means his powers will increase. He'll battle monsters and creatures from his own world, and even those from other worlds. As he faces unknown dangers, he must learn how to harness natural magic....

Misogynistic undertones distract from the story
I don't usually review books, but I regret spending money on this one. Did not end up finishing this. Enjoyed the story/world building, but it is very misogynisticly written. Lots of "she'd be pretty if she smiled more" and similar themes, which made it impossible to enjoy the book.

Natural Mage
Well performed, well written great story thank you DB. I don’t usually like academia books as the main characters are immature and emotional and most of them feel like a Harry Potter spin-off but this was really good. Thank you!

New author discovered.
Great story and enjoyable listening.
Recommend for those of us who are hearing and aged, housebound and obsessed with craft, I wish there was an omnibus available for the series.
Great narrator, kept me interested until the end.

not a complete story
I like my books to feel complete on their own merits. This book is quite simply one part of however long the saga is example they keep mentioning the academy as the place, the goal of where our characters are eventually headed. yet we don't get there. not even if a cliff hanger kinda way. There's no complete narrative here.

Classic fantasy.
It’s the start of a story in classic Fantasy. With hints of depth in story to follow.

Natural Magic
This book was quite good. I enjoyed the story line. It didn’t keep me spellbound if you pardon the pun, however I did enjoy listening and I was eager to go back to find out what adventure Alex was going to get himself into next. Eliera was a nice addition!!
I will look forward to the next book!!

Finally! A straight forward fantasy listen
I was a bit confused by a few reviews saying "very misogynisticly written" - MC is an 18 year old male, of course he's thinking like one!
Good flow and great narration. A few minor scenes were thrown off by writer hiccups e.g "the two kids ran into her safe embrace" Only to be followed by "...The bandit scooped up thomas who hadn't yet made it to Imeldas arms".
But aside from 1 or 2 of the above, the story and execution was a joy to listen to.
I look forward to more books from DBK in this genre.

Juvenile
Ok if you are eight. And never read a fantasy book in their life.
Shallow character. Unbelievable.
