About this listen

Marilyn Monroe had the most famous face of the 20th century. A legendary actress, comedienne, and sex symbol, she has been one of Hollywood’s most talked-about performers ever since she first crossed the silver screen. Her fame persisted long after her tragic death—but as time has gone by, it has become almost impossible to separate the legend of the woman born as Norma Jeane from the truth.

Now, at last, Marilyn’s real story can be told.

Written in 1954, as she approached the height of her fame, this heart-wrenching unfinished autobiography provides the best possible glimpse into what it meant to be Marilyn Monroe. From its unflinching account of her desperately poor childhood to its firsthand look at the inside of the Hollywood fame machine, My Story gives us the Marilyn nobody else saw. As her story continues to be reevaluated and retold, including in the forthcoming Netflix biopic Blonde, starring Ana de Armas, this book is the key to separating fact from fiction.

What a battle she had

Although short, it was narrated beautifully and gives one an insight into the life behind the smile and beauty.

Tragic and short

It's a pity that this was unfinished due to her death, but what a sad beginning for such an icon and how she was treated! So many suppositions about who she was by how she looked.....beautiful!

Norma-Jean: Say her name

I loved the writing and the way the book was written. January gives such a compelling voice for Marilyn and I highly recommend. I cried, laughed and empathize for Norma-Jean and enjoyed getting to know the real Marilyn as this is her own words.

It felt honest

Marilyn's life up until her marriage to Joe DiMaggio.

Poor poor woman. She reminded me of my mother-in-law, who was brought up in an orphanage until age 21. The constant seeking of approval and neediness.

It was engaging and well structured.

I would recommend it to anyone who is fascinated with the Marilyn enigma.

The narration was OK. On the whole I'm not a fan of American narrators. They have a tendency to be overly sensational.

So much more could have been written

absolutely loved it. Shame she was probably too busy to keep it up to more current times. great to hear it in her words

Eye opening

For someone who’s only heard the obvious/ popular details on Marilyn Monroe, this was a very eye opening read on the insights on what he life was actually like. Very good performance from the narrator too.

her story

Really enjoyed a look into the world of an icon. Well read and easy to fallow along to. My one complaint is its to short. It also leaves out everything after joe dimaggio.

Marilyn: A mirror for other people's thoughts

Marilyn came over as a genuinely nice person, but damaged by her early life experiences.

Rubbish

Being an avid MM fan I’ve read dozens of books and this was terrible . I doubt any of it was her words and the narrators accent and way of speech were nothing like Marilyn’s . Complete waste of time and money
