About this listen

She could never have guessed what the year would hold…

‘A pure delight . . . will stay with you long after you’re done’ TAYLOR JENKINS REID

Gazing up at the dreaming spires of Oxford, American student Ella Duran can’t believe it: she has finally arrived at Oxford University.

A new life starts, and not even Ella’s handsome lecturer Jamie Davenport can distract her from her classes. But, as the term goes on, Ella can’t deny the growing attraction between them – an attraction that soon turns to love.

And when Ella learns of Jamie’s life-changing secret, their relationship becomes deeper than Ella could have ever anticipated.

As Ella’s Oxford year draws to a close, she must decide whether the dreams she arrived with are the same ones with which she will leave…

“'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all ... A L Tennyson

This brilliant written book, will have you laughing until your sides hurt and reaching for the Kleenex.
I am not sure, if it’s Whelan’s narration of her own novel that makes it so exceptional, or her ability to to capture moments so perfectly, but whichever it is, this book is a must.
As a narrator Whelan is one of the best, she is able to capture characters and make come to life. When narrating her own work, the nuances’ are exceptional.
This journey was far more than I expected and I wasn’t ready for the last page.

“My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who and how you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness.” Maya Angelo

I didn’t want it to end

I normally pause before purchasing a book narrated by the author but this was not the case with this book. Julius Whelan had crafted a great story creating empathy and delight. The language is a joy and her narration as always was impeccable.

An Adventure in Choosing Love

Set in Oxford, winning already, My Oxford Year by Julia Whelan took me by surprise, and utterly charmed me. This is by no means your typical romance novel, and I loved it for this fact alone.

Ella Durran is an American woman, the definition of overachiever. She’s a Rhodes Scholar, has political ambitions and is not afraid of stating her opinion. Jamie Davenport is the embodiment of a ‘Posh Prat’ – he’s descended from a title, comes from money, and is too quick with his tongue. Their initial meeting is, unsurprisingly, disastrous. The moment honestly made me laugh out loud, it was perfectly written, and performed by Whelan. When Ella discovers that Jamie is to be her Professor for one of her classes, she thinks she might have made a grave error. However, after a late night drinking session, a connection that she is not anticipating becomes apparent. It soon becomes apparent to all that their casual fling has much deeper roots.

The strength of this novel lies in its amazing characters. Each of the primary and secondary characters are richly developed, with flaws and problems that make them feel achingly real and relatable. The connection between the Ella and Jamie is so intensely authentic, and their characterisation exceptional – the perfect balance between English wit and American sarcasm. This dynamic not only highlights their cultural differences but also enriches their relationship. At its core, the book explores the question of where one truly belongs and what dreams really mean. Whelan captures this struggle beautifully; for me, the resolution felt meaningful and perhaps even a triumph for the modern feminist.

Whelan’s writing is purely delightful, blending charm and wit. Her narration elevates the story, allowing her to emphasise key sections in a way that other narrators might have missed. This book is filled with witty banter, poignant moments, and a deep exploration of friendship and love. Each interaction feels authentic, capturing the nuances of relationships beautifully.

I laughed, and ugly cried – I cringed, and cheered – and most importantly, I believed. My Oxford Year is not just a romance; it’s a celebration of life, love and the choices that define us. It was a breath of fresh air for the romance genre, a tribute to life, to carrying on, to perseverance, to the unknown. It was an unforgettable read.

Powerful and evocative

A powerful and evocative tale that I didn’t expect. I too have been on Ella’s journey and her story brought all those emotions —- good and not so good to the fore.

Thank you Julia Whelan for your amazing book.
