About this listen
I'm not a mage, but that won't stop me.
Cori Catastrophe. They call me that sometimes, and I hate to admit it, but it isn’t wrong. Things go weird around me. Electronics die, things break, and if something odd happens, I seem to find it. Finding another dead body just made me late to work.
Nothing will stop me from getting my degree, getting a job, and getting away from this tiny town - though leaving my best friend will hurt more than anything else. Reality seems determined to make reaching my goals impossible. The dead guy had my name in his pocket, my best friend emerges as an archmage, and my parents - well let's just say leaving them behind is one of the best parts of getting away.
So be it. Not being a mage means I'll have to struggle to succeed. No matter how weird things get, I'll make it. I lost my brother and I'll probably lose my best friend to the world of magic. All I can do is depend on myself.
But with my luck, that might be difficult.

Love this highly original story
The narrator's quaver took a while to get used to - but now she has the perfect voice for the Cori of my imagination! I love this story! Found family is my favourite trope and this has a strong, consistent example. The FMC has a complicated history which has formed her into an unusual character in UF - she is strong but vulnerable, determined but tentative, and no Mary Sue. I appreciate the diversity of the characters and easy acceptance of their differences. The magic and tattooing are original and enthralling. The writer's style is the perfect vehicle to deliver this story, with strong worldbuilding and evocative, concise prose. I've already bought more in this series. A definite recommendation.

A beloved book
I already loved this series when I got the first audiobook. Discovering that the narrator added another facet to love without adding any drawbacks? This narrator does an amazing job of differentiating characters, and adding to the story by the way her voice holds emotions- humour, sadness, doubt, numbness even, and also considering what is happening in the story- sounding a little out of breath when there’s been exertion, sounding like talking through a mouthful when that’s what the character is doing. All around beloved book for me. It gets yearly rereads, and now that I have the audiobooks, that’s my preference- given I usually prefer reading with my eyes, that shows both my enjoyment for the performance, and my love of the writing, since it’s easier to skim or skip sections in writing.
