About this listen

When Amber left home for the first day of middle school, she was the same blonde-haired girl she had always been. However, when she came home that evening, she would not be. In an embarrassing exchange, Amber learns that her father is actually a Black man. Refusing to accept her identity, she sets into motion a series of events that will end up causing her even more anguish. Unable to deal with the revelation, Amber eventually moves in with her White grandparents.

They allow her to continue living her lie of being a White girl, but eventually her deception catches up with her. Amber runs away from home to escape the world that no longer made sense to her. She thought she found refuge in Canada, but ends up living on the streets. Amber's parents try to help her cope with her identity, but end up pushing her further away. If Amber thought being Black was difficult, wait until she experiences the result of her efforts to avoid it.
