About this listen

A deeply honest investigation of what it means to be a woman and a commodity from Emily Ratajkowski, the archetypal, multi-hyphenate celebrity of our time.

Emily Ratajkowski is an acclaimed model and actress, an engaged political progressive, a formidable entrepreneur, a global social media phenomenon and, now, a writer. Rocketing to world fame at age 21, Ratajkowski sparked both praise and furor with the provocative display of her body as an unapologetic statement of feminist empowerment. The subsequent evolution in her thinking about our culture's commodification of women is the subject of this audiobook.

My Body is a profoundly personal exploration of feminism, sexuality and power, of men's treatment of women and women's rationalizations for accepting that treatment. These essays chronicle moments from Ratajkowski's life while investigating the culture's fetishization of girls and female beauty, its obsession with and contempt for women's sexuality, the perverse dynamics of the fashion and film industries and the grey area between consent and abuse.

Nuanced, unflinching and incisive, My Body marks the debut of a fierce writer brimming with courage and intelligence.

I’ve never heard someone so accurately voice these kinds of issues. She’s not afraid to say things that I’m sure most people would like to pretend they weren’t thinking.
I found it really intriguing and insightful. It did make me feel a bit pessimistic about the world for a few days, but I’m glad I read it.

Insightful

Beautifully written. It was insightful and Emily is such a talented writer - nuanced descriptions creating deep empathy and compassion. Easy to follow along and yet still had depth and complexity in her writing.

Unique stories of Emily relating to her body which was relieving to hear her similar trials despite my body being different. I enjoyed hearing her reading - I could hear the depression, relate to the anxiety, hear her begrudging acceptance of things she had lived and hear the heartbreak when her voice cracked.

A heartfelt and deeply feeling memoir. Will be looking forward to reading more of Emily’s future writing.

I am grateful to Emily for sharing her story. Her almost dead pan honest and insightful stories of her life growing up and becoming famous and successful as a woman who is more beautiful than average. You start to understand that being beautiful is not necessarily all good all the time. She manages to give an inside view - as a child, as a young girl aspiring to achieve success and just pay the bills through to relationships and the media. And more. She is direct and succinct-self aware, acknowledging the upside and benefits she enjoyed but also revealing the exploitation and lack of compassion someone deemed to have it all experiences. Beauty comes at a cost. I enjoyed and wish I’d read this as a teenager in a way. A cautionary tale perhaps - not everything you wish for is what it seems. Some people really can’t cope with what they perceive to make someone better than them. Just because you’re rich, pretty or successful- does it make you a better person or a lesser person. For some it does.

Is being beautiful as good as you imagine
