Sabemos que queda huérfano a muy temprana edad (catorce años) y que entra en el taller de Juan del Castillo, como Zurbarán había hecho en el de Villanueva y Velázquez en el de Pacheco. Los tres pintores superaron ampliamente a sus maestros, de donde cabe deducir que la experiencia sólo puede servir de muleta al genio, tanto en éste como en cualquier orden de cosas.
