About this listen

When Jo Breen uses her divorce settlement to buy a neglected property in the Byron Bay hinterland, she is hoping for a tree change, and a blossoming connection to the land of her Aboriginal ancestors. What she discovers instead is sharp dissent from her teenage daughter, trouble brewing from unimpressed white neighbours and a looming Native Title war between the local Bundjalung families. When Jo unexpectedly finds love on one side of the Native Title divide she quickly learns that living on country is only part of the recipe for the Good Life.

Told with humour and a sharp satirical eye, Mullumbimby is a modern story set against an ancient land.

Incredible

I wouldn’t usually pick up a book like this, I generally favour lighthearted easy reads, however this was a book club book so I gave it a go. SO GLAD I DID. It was absolutely beautiful - so descriptive, and I loved the authentic feel that you got from so hearing the traditional Aboriginal language. The characters were all loveable, and Tasma was an amazing narrator. Couldn’t fault it - incredible!

Moving, illuminating, beautiful and uplifting

This is one of the best audio books I've listened to for a while. The writing is sublime, so evocative of a very beautiful part of Australia. The story is gripping and moving, funny and piognant, important and passionate. The narration bloody excellent! So glad I listened to this, the last hour kept me up til 2am... a sign of a wonderful tale.

A great story of spiritual and cultural history

Melissa Lucashenko brings the past lighting the present day to engender the future of tribal boundaries and caring for country. It's a domestic story of relationship, generational difference and inate genetic spiritual dreaming in the battle to claim native title for protection of special places and cultural landmarks.

worth a listen

it took a bit to get past the swearing initially, the speech patterns were true to character though and I have developed insight into the meaning of country for our indigenous. Really enjoy it and will be listening to this one again

It drew me in...

I started thinking it was light and superficial and readied myself to stop but by the second half I was completely hooked and listened almost non-stop. The only narration drawback was the occasional difficulty in differentiating between the characters but that improved over the recording. The contrast between the magic and the humdrum, the characters living in both, was really well done. I thought several times the author was about to make me cringe on white v blackfella triteness but it never happened. Loved the characters and the story!

I loved it!!

A good representation of the modern Australian indigenous struggle to reconcile the white invasion.
