Disappointing lack of practical content.
Overall an exciting start but a disappointingly minimal coverage of Motivational Interviewing (MI). At such a small size I commenced this book thinking it might be an excellent 5 lesson compact summary of MI and how to put it into practice but instead found essentially zero explanation of what MI is and how to apply it. The first 3 weeks was essentially “ask before giving advice” with week 4 and 5 going into one one small aspect of MI each. I could imagine this might be a difficult 5-week journey for a hard-lined old-school cranky know-it-all doctor but for a trained psychotherapist, it’s something that could have been summarised in 5min. I honestly learnt 10 times more in the first 30mins of an MI episode I listened to immediately afterwards.
