About this listen
Claudia Hampton - beautiful, famous, independent, dying. But she remains defiant to the last, telling her nurses that she will write a 'history of the world...and in the process, my own'. And it is her story, from a childhood just after the First World War through the Second and beyond.
But Claudia's life is entwined with others, and she must allow those who knew her, loved her, the chance to speak, to put across their points of view. There is Gordon, brother and adversary; Jasper, her untrustworthy lover and father of Lisa, her cool, conventional daughter; and then there is Tom, her one great love, found and lost in wartime Egypt.

Don’t make them like they used to...
A novel not read for many, many years but now, reread with such deep appreciation in a time not so far away from my own passing.
A jewel ready for any age to read of daring and the mundaneness of family life, pointless relationships and pointers to the vital need to live a life to the very best level you can.
A glorious treasure.

Oh please …..
Could not finish this boring book where the main character, Claudia, is smarter than everyone else on earth but tells her daughter no one will want to marry her if she has chewed fingernails! The story meanders from the aging Claudia to her daughter, Lisa, and Lisa’s inner thoughts! How would Claudia know what Lisa was thinking? I’m sorry but I feel the author tried too hard to be clever and failed miserably in the attempt!
