Editorial reviews

L.A. Theatre Works performs a haunting opera based on the love affair between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winner Leroy Aarons and score by composer Glenn Paxton. This alternative history sets melodic but assumption-challenging arias and recitatives in the service of social commentary, with stirring performances set in motion by a White House "scandal" initiated when the national press happens upon the longtime love affair between founding father and current president Jefferson and his slave-mistress. The production is directed by John Rubinstein; the cast includes Broadway veteran Stan Chandler as Jefferson, and acclaimed soprano Shana Blake Hill in the role of Hemings.
