About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
The audiobook of Monstrous Regiment is narrated by Katherine Parkinson, star of The IT Crowd and Here We Go. BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.
'THAT'S THE TROUBLE ABOUT THE GOOD GUYS AND THE BAD GUYS! THEY'RE ALL GUYS!'
In the small yet aggressive country of Borogravia, there are strict rules citizens must follow. For a start, women belong in the kitchen - not in jobs, pubs, or indeed trousers. And certainly not on the front line.
Polly Perks has to become a boy in a hurry if she wants to find her missing brother in the army. Cutting off her hair and wearing the trousers is easy. Going to war however, is not.
Polly and her fellow raw recruits are suddenly in the thick of a losing battle. All they have on their side is the most artful sergeant in the army and a vampire with a lust for coffee.
It's time to make a stand.
The first book in the Discworld series-The Colour of Magic-was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Loved it. Katherine brought so much to the character voices, I thought it was good fun.

Story Great, Reader no so
I love the story. Just don't know that Katherine Parkinson did the characters' justice. Her performance was a bit flat, I thought.

Wanted to be more impressed
Top quality story, and I was excited to see that Katherine Parkinson was reading it.
But, for me, she didn’t bring the right voices to it. And the passion wasn’t there. There were moments when I was fully with her, but mostly, it kinda sounded like she was a little on the uninterested side.
That said, it’s a brilliant story that everyone should read. Because whilst it’s Discworld, it’s not so heavily into it that you’d be confused. It’s a fantastic stand alone. Great views on feminism, and religion, and the ridiculousness of war. And also shows how, with just a bit of encouragement and some solid mates, anything can be achieved by anyone.

Bad narration
I normally love Katherine, but she was not the right fit here. Her voices were awful, specifically Igor, I know he has a lisp, that's what all Igor's sound like, but she made him unintelligible. The Officers in the army were awful too. The book also isn't split into chapters which when listening to go to sleep makes it hard to remember where you were. Couldn't finish it which is a shame.

Narration poor
This was my least favourite audio in the series. There was not enough variation of character voices.
