About this listen

An Economist Politics and Current Affairs book of the year.

Once upon a time, if an official stole money, there wasn't much he could do with it. He could buy himself a new car or build himself a nice house or give it to his friends and family, but that was about it. If he kept stealing, the money would just pile up in his house until he had no rooms left to put it in, or it was eaten by mice. And then some bankers in London had a bright idea. Join the investigative journalist Oliver Bullough on a journey into Moneyland - the secret country of the lawless, stateless superrich. Learn how the institutions of Europe and the United States have become money-laundering operations, undermining the foundations of Western stability.

Discover the true cost of being open for business no matter how corrupt and dangerous the customer. This is the story of wealth and power in the 21st century. It isn't too late to change it.

Great listen

This was better than my other favourite corruption book Panama papers as it covered a broader area with a story that is entertaining and flows. It’s true the corrupt rule the world and the vast majority of the rest of us are clueless. I’m now in the know and completely helpless to do anything about it.

The rich get richer and the poor have babies

I've heard that phrase many times in my life and then Oliver Bullough explains why that is so and brings it all into today's reality.
Well researched with brilliant insights, it all makes sense now

A book that helps open your eyes

Excellent book. Pushing back against Moneyland is critical to democracy, else 21st feudalism will dominate.

Great story

Informative and easy to follow.

Great for dispelling silly ideas like billionaire exceptionalism, and reinforces a more systemic critique of inequality.

Fascinating and very disturbing

We all know that crooked money sloshes around the global system, but this book exposes the vast scale, well beyond what we could ever imagine. The shocking and hypocritical complicity of Governments and institutions in facilitating and profiting from it is galling. Great book but leaves you feeling powerless and ripped off by the system.

Eye-opening

Really enjoyed this book (easy to listen to and understand as well, no jargon) - fascinating to understand how money and laws are manipulated and moved, and how governments and banks have facilitated this over the years. A great history lesson as well as a warning for the future.
