About this listen

‘It is not down on any map; true places never are.’

Regarded as one of the greatest American novels and Melville’s masterpiece, Moby Dick (also referred to as Moby-Dick; or, The Whale), is an epic adventure narrative. Although not a commercial success at the time of writing, the book is admired by several prominent authors of the twentieth century, including William Faulkner and D.H. Lawrence.

Ishmael – a sailor with a flair for reading and writing – is recruited to form a crew for the vengeful Captain Ahab, who is set on killing the giant sperm whale that claimed his leg on his ship’s previous voyage. An appalling crusade begins, as gruesome as it is extraordinary, to track down the whale and obtain Ahab’s revenge. And Ishmael – our narrator who engagingly recounts the series of events that unfold, as well as provides a compelling education on whales and the history of whaling itself – spares no detail. This audiobook edition is brought to life by the talented Robert G. Slade.

Herman Melville (1819 – 1891) was a novelist and poet of the American Renaissance, best known for his works in adventure and travel writing, including Mody Dick (1851) and Typee (1846). His writing was met with mixed reviews by his contemporaries; it wasn’t until the early twentieth century that he gained recognition for his literary genius.

Fantastic Narration

I haven’t finished yet, but felt the need to comment. Thoroughly entertaining, but particularly due to the narration. He really brings this book to life; the voices are great and gives the narrator (a primary character), a wonderful slightly arrogant naïveté.

So many narrators to choose from here on Audible, but this is my favourite one. Thank you Robert!
