Critic Reviews

"Parenting is possibly our most rewarding and challenging task. Amber Hatch provides a wide-ranging account of how mindfulness and compassion can support and enrich parenting. She writes from a depth of knowledge and experience, and with a fluency and skill that makes the ideas accessible and useable. Her work is at the forefront of an important and very promising field of enquiry." (Willem Kuyken, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, Oxford University)

Could only listen to 30 mins ...

What disappointed you about Mindfulness for Parents?

I gave the book thirty minutes to grab me, having been attracted by the title and write up on audible.com. However, the author seemed to want to talk about home birthing experiences, the Buddhism origins of mindfulness and why I should read the book - but failed to convince me the book had any interesting information.
After thirty minutes, I should know what I am going to hear, how the content is organised etc for something that could be loosely described as a self help book. There was no compelling information about the author to make me think they were a recognized authority, or had researched the topic in any real way.
All I knew was the author was in to home birthing and had a baby at 24. She hadn't even explained how old her child (children?) were at the time of writing so I could even work out whether her personal experience covered the ages my children are.
I can see why Blinkist could be the next big thing in audio books - if there is any information of value in this book, I certainly don't have the time to waste waiting for it, and would probably have missed it in the noise.

What didn’t you like about Colleen Prendergast’s performance?

The narrator's voice really grated on me, I realize that's a personal taste thing, but I was quite put off by the harsh tone. In addition, for whatever reason, the narrator's voice did not make the author's words sound like the work of an authority on the subject.
