Mindfulness for Kids

Did you know that, in the US alone, over 1.1 million children have been misdiagnosed with ADHD, with 800,000 of them receiving stimulant medication as a result?

Brashness, tantrums and short attention spans are every parent’s nightmare. In my practice, I get a lot of parents who can’t even remember the last time they had some peace around the house, uninterrupted conversations with guests, or even a seamless family night out together, without the fits of rage coming from their otherwise little angels. Because of this, many are tempted to go to the doctor to find some kind of medication or pill that could make their troubles go away.

But is this the correct thing to do?

With the growing misdiagnoses of ADD and ADHD, and the surging of pharmaceutical companies whose bottom lines depend on these diagnoses, bringing your child for testing is something parents are beginning to think twice about.

My recommendation?

What I and the other experts recommend is starting with behavior therapy first. Mindfulness, for instance, has gone from being a niche spiritual practice to a scientifically proven, cognitive-based approach to teaching your child the art of present awareness, inner peace, and happiness.
