Midnight of Ashes picks up from the exact moment Twilight of Embers leaves off, so it is pivotal to begin with book one. It continues with the themes of danger, mystery, discovery of oneself and of building relationships. We get an introduction to the hierarchy of the shifter world, and we see Hayden and her men all grow and develop.
The near tragedy that occurred at the end of ToE was a wake up call for Hayden and her mates, and it served as a catalyst in many ways. Through this book, we watch as she forms deeper connections with some of her bonds, and we get a deeper insight into what's holding some of them back. I loved seeing the change in Easton and Maddox, even if the angst squeezed painfully at my heart.
We got a few plot threads handed to us, with near bombshells that make you think over what you've already read/heard, trying to see if there was something you missed. The plot is constantly twisting and turning, creating a larger narrative with so many questions that you just want answered.
The spice ramps up as the relationships do, and I love some of the unique elements that Hale has thrown in when it comes to bonding, and her dragons as a whole. And who doesn't love a good scene where the FMC pats dragons like they're puppies? I still giggle at that chapter a few days on.
Again, the audio cast absolutely brought it. Vanessa continues to be a beautiful voice for Hayden, embodying her personality and her quirks with every word. The cast of men who lend their voices are all perfect for their characters, and I could not imagine listening to this audio without any of them. Each one is distinct in voice as well as personality, which really brings life to the characters they voice.
Midnight of Ashes ends on another killer cliffhanger, which I won't deny had me muttering "dude" for a few moments as I tried to wrap my head around what happened. Hale has me absolutely hooked with this series, and I cannot wait for Dawn of Flames.

The worst book… ever?
Kept listening in disbelief. The MMC has no discernible traits, thoughts, interests but the men are slowly enraptured by her. Lots of ‘he chuckled’. Life and death stakes BUT I have to go to school! It’s like chat gpt rewrote a book written by a 13 year old and took out any descriptive language or emotion.
Crazy to hear such great voice actors on this absurdly lifeless book
