تعدُّ مسرحية تاجر البندقية واحدة من أشهر مسرحيات شكسبير وتدور أحداثها بين مدينتي البندقية وبلمونت حيث تبدأ بحوارٍ بين أنطونيو وصديقه باسانيو يطلب فيه باسانيو من صديقه مالًا من أجل خطبة حبيبته برسيا ولكن حينها لم يكن متوفرًا مع أنطونيو أي مبلغ من المال فطلب من صديقه أن يقترض المال وهو سيكفله به. يلجأ باسانيو إلى شايلوك المرابي اليهودي المعروف في البندقية فيقترض منه ثلاثة آلاف دينار ويتعهَّد أنطونيو بكفالته بعد ثلاثة أشهر، يجد شايلوك في هذا الشيء فرصةً للاقتناص من أنطونيو الذي كان يحتقره دائمًا فيضع شرطًا عجيبًا ألا وهو في حال عدم السداد في الوقت المحدَّد سوف يقتطع رطلًا من لحم أنطونيو ، ووافق الأخير على الشَّرط ....

تتعثَّر بضائع أنطونيو بغرق مركبه في البحر مما يحول بينه وبين سداد المبلغ فيبدأ شايلوك بالمطالبة بتنفيذ الشرط أمام المحكمة، عرضَ أصدقاء أنطونيو على شايلوك بأن يدفعوا المبلغ ولكنّه لم يقبل حتى بثلاثة أضعافه... وفي يوم المحاكمة تتنكّر برسيا خطيبة باسانيو بزيّ محامي وتدخل هي لتدافع عن أنطونيو وتنقذه بحيلةٍ ذكية وبسيطة.
