About this listen
Psychiatrist Dr Mark Cross has spent most of his adult life working in the mental health system. He also suffers from anxiety, as do three out of four Australians at some point in their lives, so he knows first-hand the challenges, successes and failures facing consumers, patients and professionals. What he has discovered is that while Australia’s physical health system is world-renowned, its mental health system falls miserably short. From soaring out-of-pocket costs to excruciatingly long wait times, and from overworked clinicians to inhumane treatment conditions, we are failing people at all stages of their journey to mental wellbeing.
This book takes a deep dive into mental ill-health – who lives with it, how we care for them and what we need to do better. Written in Dr Cross’s warm and entertaining style, Mental State includes his own stories of working inside the system, as well as the experiences of consumers attempting to navigate it and the practitioners working within it.

A contemporary confronting reality check - a masterclass
This is the first book that genuinely respects and speaks to the varying and sometimes misunderstood perspectives of the many people that co exist in the fragmented mental health ecosystem. Solutions proposed are achievable if we are all willing to understand perspectives and pain points other than our own. This book is a must read if your life and livelihood depend upon acknowledging the reality of what is broken and then are willing to collaboratively work together to mend and heal. Our mental health and emotional wealth is worth it, we owe this to our children and their children. Thank Mark for your candor and being such a great Humanitarian.

This man is hands down a psychological genius
I loved this book!
I've personally engaged with Dr Cross as a patient, this is what has led me to listen to his books, he has literally been my saving grace, his understanding, of my diagnoses, and his compassionate and lighthearted humorous approach have made me feel not only heard and understood but "Normal" as far as my normal goes anyway...let's face it we all have a bit of our version "crazy" within. As a neurodivergent individual with a few overlapping diagnoses, I'm a firm believer that it takes many kinds to make the world go round, and it would be a boring place if we were all the same. Mark has helped me to understand that I'm not broken and that I don't need to be fixed, that my life and diagnoses can be successfully managed with the right medication and tools, and that's exactly what he has armed me with.
