Lass har endelig fundet Skyggefolket, eller faktisk har de fundet ham. De fører ham dybt ind i bjerget til deres underjordiske by. Her håber han på at møde sin biologiske mor og far, men i stedet bliver han buret inde. Hans vogter, Pilah-bah, er en ung pige med stribede ar på kinderne og ring i næsen. Han prøver at udspørge hende om sine forældre, men hun begynder bare at brumme højt. Utallige gange har Lass forestillet sig mødet med Skyggefolket og sine forældre. Men aldrig på den måde.
Oswa-aka sad i skrædderstilling foran det store bål, i bæltet havde han en lang kniv. Lass gøs ved synet. "Skyggefolket har talt, sunget og danset..." "Øh, nå..." var det eneste, der kom ud af hans mund. I det samme gik det op for ham. Der var kun to muligheder. Enten accepterede de ham eller også... Han så på kniven og sank.
