About this listen
When Jack Vance's grandfather is murdered, his dying words are to get Jack to promise to attend Darkthorn Academy.
Jack doesn't like it, but he'll do what is necessary to honor the man who raised him. But surviving Darkthorn Academy won't be easy. Jack will have to make alliances, learn to harness magic, and face dangerous enemies - both alive and dead. If he's lucky, he might just make it to second year.
Darkthorn Academy is a coming-of-age fantasy adventure with gamelit aspects, including a slightly overpowered MC, a dragon companion, and a team of adventurers. It’s inspired by games like Skyrim, Diablo 2 and Fallout.

Hugely enjoyable!
A great listen/read! A well thought out plot, with in depth characters and well described locations. The story moves at a good pace, and all scenes are there for a reason, (no fillers). The narrator does a great job too! The humour is amusing as well! I will be listening to more from this series.

loved the story! definitely worth it
great writing and characters. ammusing and dramatic
voice acting was also enjoyable. The editing however, got on my nerves. The gaps between recorded lines was slightly too long. Almost like Shatner with dramatic pauses being unnecessarily added
I set to 1.2x speed, which helped with the annoyance. didn't solve it but helped. But also meant the voices were now a little rushed. But a good compromise
I will be buying the next book

Unrealistically Childish
Characters remained obnoxiously immature despite experiences that should have taught them.
If beatings to near death, lectures from mentors and imprisonment don't teach a character not to act like a naive child and provoke dangerous enemies there is something wrong.

Narrative
unfortunately the narrative was quite ‘dumbed’ down even teenagers don’t talk like this, a real shame if this is the author’s decision to ruined a great storyline with childish narrative. Shame the dragon relationship wasn’t highlighted & made more special.
