About this listen
A continuation of the serendipitous saga commenced in Raving Violet, Valerie Gilbert’s first non-fiction collection of short stories, Memories, Dreams & Deflections: My Odyssey Through Emotional Indigestion, picks up the sojourn of this sassy, single mystic, mired in her mind and cloistered above the streets of New York City.
This volume explores Valerie’s intrepid and irreverent search for healing inside and out (both medical and mystical), the quest for peace (and quiet) and, as always, true love.

Saucy, wise and encouraging all at the same time!
What did you like most about Memories, Dreams & Deflections?
Valerie is a fantastic storyteller with a fresh and honest perspective. She's examined her life inside and out, and reports on wide ranging trials and tribulations with love, wit, heartbreak and hope. She is refreshingly unsentimental, which is my personal hallmark of excellence.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Valerie encounters so many people on this journey, and brings them to life with her observations of what makes these humans tick. The crying woman on the subway, Mr. Black, Yves Volel her Haitian math teacher, the homeless man on the corner. But most of all, Valerie herself shines as the central character who confronts life head on with unapologetic gusto and humor.
What does Valerie Gilbert bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Valerie puts the emphasis in all the right spots to make a point while making us laugh. I can hear her sharp humor bristle and crackle. Hearing her narrate is both entertaining and thought provoking, the best of both.
Any additional comments?
It's great to hear so honestly about things many of us aren't able to articulate. After listening to Memories, Dreams & Deflections, I can laugh a little bit more about the state of the world and, more importantly, have some inspiration to do something about it.
