Publisher's Summary
Twenty years ago Helen Franklin did something she cannot forgive herself for, and she has spent every day since barricading herself against its memory. But her sheltered life is about to change.
A strange manuscript has come into her possession. It is filled with testimonies from the darkest chapters of human history, which all record sightings of a tall, silent woman in black, with unblinking eyes and bleeding feet: Melmoth, the loneliest being in the world. Condemned to walk the Earth forever, she tries to beguile the guilty and lure them away for a lifetime wandering alongside her.
Everyone that Melmoth seeks out must make a choice: to live with what they've done or be led into the darkness. Helen can't stop reading or shake the feeling that someone is watching her. As her past finally catches up with her, she too must choose which path to take.
Exquisitely written, and gripping until the very last minute, this is a masterpiece of moral complexity, asking us profound questions about mercy, redemption and how to make the best of our conflicted world.

Spooky and thrilling
LOVED this book, and especially perfect to listen in audio, given the ending (no spoilers). The supernatural horror had me at the edge of my seat but never too scared to finish the story. I know a lot of people have complained about the story being dreary but it's not done for no reason, there's such an important message here about the banality of evil and how to navigate grief and guilt to get to hope. The narrator does a fantastic job telling the story and all the character voices. she read a bit slow for me but I found her performance and voice was still beautiful sped up to 1.4x and that was the perfect pace for me. Really glad I waited to listen to this rather than read it

Dreary
I enjoyed The Essex Serpent, it was a gentle well written and quirky story, unfortunately though this one is tiresome to say the least. The lead character Helen is uninspiring, a wet blanket of the first order, her friends aren’t much better and the story unfolds soooooo slowly you just don’t care what happens in the end, in fact I’ve paused the last chapter in bored exasperation so many times it’s taken me over two days to finish it and I still have 10 minutes to go, I’m not sure I’ll bother to be honest. Emilia Fox is a good narrator she does a great job with creating the characters I can’t fault her but she just can’t give them any umpff! Very disappointed.
