About this listen
The deeply personal story of why award-winning personal finance blogger Elizabeth Willard Thames abandoned a successful career in the city and embraced extreme frugality in order to create a more meaningful, purpose-driven life and retire to a homestead in the Vermont woods at age 32 with her husband and daughter.
In 2014, Elizabeth and Nate Thames were conventional 9-5 young urban professionals. But the couple had a dream to become modern-day homesteaders in rural Vermont. Determined to retire as early as possible in order to start living each day - as opposed to wishing time away working for the weekends - they enacted a plan to save an enormous amount of money: well over 70 percent of their joint take-home pay. Dubbing themselves the Frugalwoods, Elizabeth began documenting their unconventional frugality and the resulting wholesale lifestyle transformation on their eponymous blog.
In less than three years, Elizabeth and Nate reached their goal. Today, they are financially independent and living out their dream on a 66 acre homestead in the woods of rural Vermont with their young daughter. While frugality makes their lifestyle possible, it's also what brings them peace and genuine happiness. They don't stress out about impressing people with their material possessions, buying the latest gadgets, or keeping up with any Joneses. In the process, Elizabeth discovered the self-confidence and liberation that stems from disavowing our culture's promise that we can buy our way to "the good life". Elizabeth unlocked the freedom of a life no longer beholden to the clarion call to consume ever-more products at ever-higher sums.
Meet the Frugalwoods is the intriguing story of how Elizabeth and Nate realized that the mainstream path wasn't for them, crafted a lifestyle of sustainable frugality, and reached financial independence at age 32. While not everyone wants to live in the woods or quit their jobs, many of us want to have more control over our time and money and lead more meaningful, simplified lives. Following their advice, you too can live your best life.

A realistic guide to building a loveable lifestyle
This book was recommended by my mother in law because as she said 'it will sum up the lifestyle my partner and I have lived for the past few years'. We used all of these strategies plus many more to achieve the same goal of buying our little hobby farm (homestead) at 26 in Australia. Its all possible when you have the same concept on life as these two do in this book. Will highly recommend this book to anyone who asks us how we did it at our age.

Loved this book!
A well written, well read book perfect for anyone who is trying to live a more simple frugal life. Was mostly about her life but there were also lots of great tips. Takes a good look at how our culture works and inspires you to walk your own path.

A great story
At very least this is a great story that illustrates one of the many paths to financial independence. It focuses on the impact of living a more intentional life and how this can bring happiness.

Really enjoyed it
I like reading about personal finances - while this isn’t an instructional book its definitely fascinating to listen to their journey and what bits and pieces I can apply in my own life.

Entertaining, inspirational and educational.
I really enjoyed this book, so much that I listened to it all in one day. The financial advice wasn’t anything new but the way of thinking about what you spend your money on was inspiring. I immediately cancelled all of my unnecessary subscriptions and reconsidered my shopping habits. I have a new found motivation to create savings with a positive attitude rather than feeling deprived. Something I haven’t felt through reading any other ‘financial’ book.

Great story and writing
I really loved this book, Elizabeth’s journey has been similar to my own but she finds much better words to describe her experience and thoughts around her philosophy than I ever could. It really helped me understand my own journey and inspired me to become even more frugal.
For someone who isn’t frugal yet but thinks there’s something missing in their lives, who realised material possessions don’t bring happiness or who is interested in financial independence, this book is a great read and beautifully written.
