Material som i efterhand hittats på Vitön blandas med anteckningar ur deltagarnas dagböcker, almanackor och journaler. Vi får även följa med på förberedelserna för expeditionen, arbetet efteråt med att tillvarata fynden och att frakta kropparna tillbaka till Stockholm.
Knut Hjalmar Ferdinand Frænkel (1870-1897) var ingenjör och upptäcktsresande. Salomon August Andrée (1854-1897) var även han ingenjör och äventyrare. Nils Strindberg (1872-1897) var vetenskapsman och fotograf. Alla tre deltog i Andrées polarexpedition 1897.
