About this listen
'An immensely engaging writer: wry and witty, and insightful.' Sunday Times
'A vivid and meticulous writer.' Observer
From the widely renowned author Andrew O'Hagan, a heartbreaking novel of an extraordinary lifelong friendship.
Everyone has a Tully Dawson: the friend who defines your life.
In the summer of 1986, in a small Scottish town, James and Tully ignite a brilliant friendship based on music, films and the rebel spirit. With school over and the locked world of their fathers before them, they rush towards the climax of their youth: a magical weekend in Manchester, the epicentre of everything that inspires them in working-class Britain. There, against the greatest soundtrack ever recorded, a vow is made: to go at life differently. Thirty years on, half a life away, the phone rings. Tully has news.
Mayflies is a memorial to youth's euphorias and to everyday tragedy. A tender goodbye to an old union, it discovers the joy and the costs of love.

Brilliant! Utterly brilliant!
Beautifully read by the author with feeling and authenticity. A story of friendship across the years addressing two distinct points in time. Dealing with hedonistic youth and reality of age, illness, and taking control of your end. Loved it, related to it, felt it in my bones ❤️

A close to home coming of age with wit and insight
A tremendously engaging account of male friendship and universal life stages journey. I loved this book for its tenderness and tropes of men through their ages. The relationships, fears, lives, loves and losses.

reality bites
a story read by the author and I don't think anyone could have told it with so much emotion.
the story itself is moving but not so profound to make you sit in a corner contemplating the mortality of life.

A fantastic story
I chose this book on the recommendation by Trent Dalton when he appeared on ABC and was asked to pick some favourite books. Very entertaining but also very poignant.

I'm crying and laughing!!
I will be listening to this book again! the story interweaving the bright lives of some mates on a weekend of crazy fun, and then catching them in their later years is wonderful. Then following Tully and Noodles till the end...i don't want to give anything away.
Do yourself a favour, listen to this story.
Andrew O'Hagans Scottish accent is a delight to listen to. I'm an Aussie who is a sucker for this accent!
