About this listen
In the struggle between warring parents, who will protect the child?
Garry Hartshorn and Softie Monaghan were never love's young dream. Not even on their wedding day.
Softie was sophisticated, a career woman, who owned a nice apartment overlooking St Kilda Beach. Garry had a few rough edges, plus one failed marriage and an assortment of jobs under his belt. But Softie's body clock was ticking, and Garry wanted children....
So they got married and produced the only thing they ever had in common: Matilda.
Now, two years later, their golden-haired child is at the centre of a bitter divorce and custody battle. Both parents insist that her well-being is the only thing they care about. Yet, in truth, Matilda was always the one most likely to become lost.

Good - though a bit drawn out
I did enjoy the book - the two parallel stories portrayed the trauma to the whole extended family in the case of relationship breakdowns.
But - listening to the transcripts of Gary and Softie was almost excruciating towards the end ‘he said’ ‘I said’ then ‘he said’ than ‘I said’ OMG! It got better when Gary actually started saying ‘then I go’, ‘then she goes’ - believe it or not 😳
If you can ignore that snd get through - it is worth it.

Good story about marriage & divorce
Good story about an inappropriate match, and the breakdown of the marriage and the impact it can have on children. At times there is too much detail, which might be enlightening for some, but for others who have gone through childbirth and certain situations, it took too long. I feel very sorry for Gary, and while he was far from perfect I think out of the two of them she behaved way worse overall. Good listen though.

A Dilema of truth and trust
A frustrating account of trial by speculation, wrongs unrighted. Depth of personality in the characters is weakly sketched unlike other Overington's books. The frustration of the main character Gary Gary is conveyed brilliantly as one can clearly see how an abusive and poor upbringing can shape a person who has difficulty being listened to or heard.

Aborning
Caroline captures the frustration of the subject matter well. Presenting both sides of the argument in a unique way. Delicate matters handled with respect.
Narration is good, tho girls voices not the best.
I was absorbed in the story from the start

Worthy of a Listen
While this isn’t my favourite of Caroline’s books it’s still with a listen.
Caroline has a wonderful knack of twisting stories together with unexpected outcomes while covering the tough topics like family breakdowns & court battles that highlight no one really wins.
And certainly not the children
