Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

‘Seconds after Brady’s plane was hit, the Hundredth’s entire formation was broken up and scattered by swarms of single-engine planes, and by rockets launched by twin-engine planes that flew parallel.'

Meet the Flying Fortresses of the American Eighth Air Force, Britain’s Lancaster comrades, who helped to bring down the Nazis.

Historian and World War II expert Donald Miller brings us the story of the bomber boys who brought the war to Hitler's doorstep. Unlike ground soldiers, they slept on clean beds, drank beer in local pubs and danced to the swing music of the travelling Air Force bands. But they were also an elite group of fighters who put their lives on the line in the most dangerous role of all.

Miller takes listeners from the adrenaline-filled battles in the sky, to the airbases across England, the German prison camps and onto the ground to understand the devastation faced by civilians.

Drawn from interviews, oral histories and American, British and German archives, Masters of the Air is the authoritative, deeply moving and important account of the world's first and only bomber war.

Horrific experiences.

What surprised me the most was what Switzerland did during the war Have never heard a lot of their behaviour. Very good narration. Some very Horrific stories. Quite long but well worth hanging out until the end.

Duality of Man - Hypocrisy of War

What stood out was how young they were and how much was asked of them.

Detailed and thorough

I have read many accounts of pilots and bomber crews, from both sides of the conflict, and this book, despite its length remains interesting by exploring all the aspects of the development of the US strategic bombing campaign from the broadest development concepts to narratives of the individuals who flew, without any support for a very long time, into a continent totally controlled by the enemy. contrasting it with the British/commonwealth night raids and their different approaches and the reasons for them. Some books that take a wider view can be boring to anyone but scholars or statistic oriented readers, but this book blended the history down to individual narratives that were interesting, funny, tragic and show the difference between what old men decide on a planning board, to the experience of the flower of their nations youth who sacrifice their lives, youth, health and everything to achieve their commanders intent. Great book, I hope the series does it justice

Great listen A++

This is a an extremely in-depth book of the American air war over Germany. It primarily focussed on American bombing with minor British exploits. I would recommend for anyone interested in the air war as it is covers from start to finish of the war.

Attention to Detail is Outstanding.

The attention to detail is just fantastic, perfectly written and perfectly spoken. Some parts were deeply upsetting, what these people went through was beyond belief. The description of the English countryside and the American invasion of the English island is brilliantly described. The last great generation, indescribable suffering what they went through, So wonderfully written it takes you back to those times, what men they were and what heroes, a generation that will never be matched. What the Americans did for the world must never be forgotten. A must read and listen.
