About this listen
Marty Bell knows what it's like to be bullied. He was the shy, overweight kid at school, and those memories have helped turn him into an excellent teacher - though he's never spread his wings beyond the remote northern village where he grew up.
The last thing he needs in his life is the reappearance of Devlin Surtees, leader of the gang who made his schooldays so tough. Dev is the glamorous village hero now, flying acrobatics planes and fighter jets for the RAF. He's just as spellbinding, handsome and infuriating as Marty recalls.
But the years have transformed both of them, and their old enmity blazes up into a powerful attraction. The sex is great, and Marty's beginning to wonder if the schoolteacher and the stunt pilot might have some kind of future - until a terrible secret of Devlin's comes to light and threatens to drag both of them down into a vortex of the past.

Great but jumped the shark towards the end!
At school, Marty was bullied by Devlin Surtees and his gang, but he couldn’t shake his crush on Devlin. Years later, Devlin returns to the village a swaggering RAF pilot and he seems to want Marty. Devlin’s always been able to use his charm to get what he wants, but he’s also secretive, evasive, and mercurial. With alarm bells ringing, Marty wants to follow his heart but his head isn’t sure. Told from Marty’s POV, I loved most things about this. The initial school sports day scenes were amazing and I loved how Harper drew out the changes in Marty from downtrodden teen to more confident adult with Marty retaining his innate kindness to others. I also loved Devlin’s feet of clay and I enjoyed the exploration of Devlin’s increasingly obvious secret (no spoilers) but I felt like the plot went a bit overboard towards the end. It moved from believable drama to overly dramatic villainy - still worth it though! UK voice artist Chris Clog does wonderful work on the audiobook.
