About this listen

57 BC. The fearsome Belgae have gathered a great army to oppose Rome, and Fronto and the legions assemble once more to take Caesar's war against the most dangerous tribes in the northern world.

While the legions battle the Celts in the fiercest war of Caesar's career, the plots and conspiracies against him, both at Rome and among his own army, become ever deeper and more dangerous.

Stunning - fast, brutal and exciting!

Simon Turney has, in this novel, cemented himself on my 'top shelf' authors. I listened to both the first and this, the second, books before writting this. If you like Ben Kane, Simon Scarrow or Anthony Riches, do yourself the favour of this series.

The character development through the first two is fast, but is enough to gain attachments to each main character. The sense of camaraderie and military life is great, without too much focus on needless rigidity to formulaic routine. The battle sections, at times, seem to skip details, but when Simon Turney decides to unleash the detailed bloody mayhem, he it right there next to Ben Kane's Eagles series and Anthony Riches (all of his books lol). I am a big fan of the brutal details within battles and this series does not disappoint. The 'big one' in this book is breathtaking....

Highly recommended - true 10/10. Now onto book 3 and another late night!
