About this listen
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize—a powerful love story set against the backdrop of the Civil War, from the author of The Secret Chord.
From Louisa May Alcott's beloved classic Little Women, Geraldine Brooks has animated the character of the absent father, March, and crafted a story "filled with the ache of love and marriage and with the power of war upon the mind and heart of one unforgettable man" (Sue Monk Kidd). With "pitch-perfect writing" (USA Today), Brooks follows March as he leaves behind his family to aid the Union cause in the Civil War. His experiences will utterly change his marriage and challenge his most ardently held beliefs. A lushly written, wholly original tale steeped in the details of another time, March secures Geraldine Brooks' place as a renowned author of historical fiction.

"Honorable, elegant and true." (John Freeman, The Wall Street Journal)

Outstanding historical fiction
Brilliant insight into the American civil war aligned beautifully with the classic novel Little Women. Geraldine Brooks is a master of the genre and this one had me captivated the whole journey. Narration was excellent

A compelling listening experience
Not always an easy or comfortable book, this story is brilliantly and beautifully conceived and written. I learned much history that I was unaware of, and feel like I am a better person for having absorbed some of the principles and knowledge in this novel.

A wonderful book
‘March’ is a wonderful book, evoking the language and manners of the Civil War time in America. It is richly imagined, bringing the cruelty of the slave era to life , as well as the horrors and human suffering in battle.
March’s struggles with remorse and shame and Grace’s wise words about there being no other choice than to go on and live positively will carry a strong message of encouragement to many readers.

Excellent
Geraldine Brooks is one of the best researchers I e come across when it comes to her novels. She has fleshed out this novel beautifully. Although a bit slow in places I couldn’t stop listening. I was so caught up with Mr March and his ideals . It was fascinating and quite brilliant. Bravo!

Definitely qualifies for 5 stars
This is a classy book. So well researched and written. A clever device to build a story around Little Women, and to use Amos Bronson Alcott as a model for building the character of Mr March. Full of wisdom and life lessons. Wonderfully described characters, and very satisfying. Highly recommend and will be looking to read more from Geraldine Brooks.

Geraldine’s best writing
War in none of its glory. Brutal, yet tender. Geraldine’s finest writing. A must read for all those who have finished Little Women and are ready to open their hearts to the darker adult resonances that lie beneath the radiant children’s tale.
