Vandet synker i den islandske sø, Kleifarvatn. På søens bund finder man et skelet, der tilsyneladende har ligget der længe. Det har et stort hul i kraniet, og omkring dets hals er der omviklet radioudstyr af russisk fabrikat. Alt peger på en forbrydelse begået under den kolde krig. Mens Erlendur og hans Reykjavik-team efterforsker en række halvt udviskede spor fra en svunden tid, fortælles en anden historie. Den handler om en ung islandsk studerende, der opfyldt af politiske drømme rejser til det kommunistiske Leipzig i 1960’erne. Her konfronteres han med et system, der overvåger og knuser alt på sin vej. Og her møder han sit livs kærlighed.
