About this listen

A gripping, fearless exploration of masculinity

The effects of traditionally defined masculinity have become one of the most prevalent social issues of our time. In this engaging and provocative new book, beloved actor, director, and social activist Justin Baldoni reflects on his own struggles with masculinity. With insight and honesty, he explores a range of difficult, sometimes uncomfortable topics including strength and vulnerability, relationships and marriage, body image, sex and sexuality, racial justice, gender equality, and fatherhood.

Writing from experience, Justin invites us to move beyond the scripts we’ve learned since childhood and the roles we are expected to play. He challenges men to be brave enough to be vulnerable, to be strong enough to be sensitive, to be confident enough to listen. Encouraging men to dig deep within themselves, Justin helps us reimagine what it means to be man enough and in the process what it means to be human.

Deep. Real deep.

I had high expectations for this book after watching Justin's pre-launch interviews. In a way, the book wasn't what I expected. But maybe that's because I'm not a man? I really loved some of the chapters but lost interest over a few too. As I said, he goes deep, really deep into issues associated with masculinity and perhaps I lost interest a but because it was not relevant to me? Overall I WOULD recommend this book to others. Men AND women need to hear this book and decide for themselves, what does it mean to BE A MAN? Love you Justin.

Must read for all men from puberty into adulthood

This book talks about delicate topics, makes you question your own manhood and how you define masculinity. It is very well written and even better read. You can hear his emotion when talking about his wife and kids or when he feels deeply passionate about the subject, or when he feels vulnerable.
Throw away your doubts about this book and do yourself a favour.

Redefine manhood and transform yourself!

I was first drawn to this book by Justin’s TEDx talk and then his podcast, Man Enough. You can be a daily listener of his podcast and still get waves of deep understanding from reading this book and knowing his personal journey.

As an alpha woman in business and relationships, I typically attract very feminine men. I mean this in terms of men who are emotive but struggle with expressing, identifying those emotions and having a safe space to explore their emotions as an integral part of their identity. I never knew until now how easily hurt a man can be, but not show it. As an inquisitive, observant and empathetic woman I can see it, and I have been having conversations with many men throughout my life around this twisted and complex notion of masculinity. I struggled for many years on how to have these conversations, and I think from now on, I’ll just direct them to this book haha

This book shows how not only men can grow and become the strongest versions of themselves in every aspect of their identity, but also how women can nurture and care for this development which seems to happen much later in men.

This should be standard reading and I cannot praise this book enough and the courage Justin had to have to manifest this forth. Hand on heart, I endeavour to build all the men in my life up to their greatest potential, knowing there are resources like this out there that I can fall back on. Thank you Justin for pushing through your insecurities and fears for this book. It truely is incredible!

An enjoyable and thought-provoking listen

An honest and refreshing read that firstly explores (and then challenges) the expectations that men force on themselves to be 'enough'. Expectations that lead to isolation, insecurity, false-bravado, and overcompensation.

It's important to note that this book is not about discouraging masculinity, or beating-up on men, or generally virtue signalling. It's actually a book for men... that essentially says 'hey, all that stuff you don't talk about in case you seem less manly... yeah, we all do that... maybe give talking about it a try sometime'.

Justin discusses these topics with humour, insight, and a hearty helping of personal examples; and I found myself relating to a lot of his topics and examples on a deep level. I listened to the audiobook, at it was very much like having an honest conversation with a friend over a beer.

There were parts of the book that weren't for me - particularly some of the faith-based discussion; but these didn't detract from Justin's core messages.

Overall, an enjoyable and thought-provoking listen.
