About this listen
In the old world there were many rules.
In the new world there is only one: don't open your eyes.
In the 17 years since the 'creatures' appeared, many people have broken that rule. Many have looked. Many have lost their minds, their lives, their loved ones. In that time, Malorie has raised her two children - Olympia and Tom - on the run or in hiding. Now nearly teenagers, survival is no longer enough. They want freedom. When a census-taker stops by their refuge, he is not welcome. But he leaves a list of names - of survivors building a future beyond the darkness - and on that list are two names Malorie knows. Two names for whom she'll break every rule, and take her children across the wilderness, in the hope of becoming a family again....

YESS!!
Malerman is the master of tension building, answering all our questions from his first novel.
I also REALLY appreciate an author who ACTUALLY isn't super vague/ open ended books.
Both riveting and completely terrifying- one I thought about for a long time after finishing.

Disappointing
Literally NOTHING happened. I wish this book never existed. It was way better when we know less about the "creatures", which wasn't explained properly what they were or why they were there in the first place anyway. The repetitive sentences were way too annoying especially when listening, and it seems like Malorie got way dumber, as if she was real, she would definitely vote for certain someone. I gave 3 stars for the sake of the first book. I love Josh Malerman books but this one definitely disappointed me beyond words.
