About this listen
Bloomsbury presents Magic Pill written and read by Johann Hari.
'A wonderfully accessible exploration of one of the most complex problems of our age' TELEGRAPH
'Magic Pill will help you think more clearly about eating, dieting, health and mental health, even if you never touch Ozempic' JONATHAN HAIDT
The bestselling author of Lost Connections and Stolen Focus takes a revelatory look at the new drugs transforming weight loss as we know it – sharing his personal experience on Ozempic and examining our ability to heal society’s dysfunctional relationship with food, weight and our bodies.
In January 2023, Johann Hari started to inject himself once a week with Ozempic, one of the new drugs that produces significant weight loss. He wasn’t alone – some predictions suggest that in a few years, one in four of the British population will be taking these drugs. While around 80 per cent of diets fail, someone taking one of the new drugs is likely to lose up to a quarter of their body weight in six months. To the drugs’ defenders, this is a moment of liberation from a condition that massively increases your chances of diabetes, cancer and an early death.
Still, Hari was wildly conflicted. Can these drugs really be as good as they sound? Are they a magic solution – or a magical illusion? Finding the answer to this high-stakes question led him on a journey from Iceland to Minneapolis to Tokyo, and to interview the leading experts in the world on these issues. He found that along with the drugs' massive benefits come twelve significant potential risks. He also learned that these drugs radically challenge what we think we know about shame, willpower and healing.
These drugs are about to change our world, for better and for worse. Everybody needs to understand how they work – scientifically, emotionally and culturally. Magic Pill is an essential guide to the revolution that has already begun – and which one leading expert argues could be as transformative as the invention of the smartphone.
'A brilliant synthesis of so much important information. Really important, and very necessary' STEPHEN FRY

A must read!
Thought provoking and eye opening. Enjoyed this book from beginning to end. This begs us to ask what are we doing to ourselves and the food company giants should be held accountable for targeting our young people with their sugary, salty, highly processed foods.

Fascinating
Johann has written a compelling piece about the use of diet drugs - their effects not only on the physical changes in the body, but the psychological changes/issues that arise with taking away the desire to eat, and the way the economy has already been affected.

Eye opener to the food industry
Great insight into the toxic food culture of the nation and how the big companies are all about profits. Well read, really interesting.

Well written, well researched & well narrated
A must read for anyone already taking these new drugs, anyone considering taking them & anyone prescribing them. There’s currently nothing as comprehensive out there about these drugs that’s so accessible for just about anyone. You will be fascinated, you will be hopeful, you’ll experience some degree of fear and concern, you may even feel angry at certain moments. You are unlikely to feel terrible about yourself but by the end, you are highly likely to feel empowered by the information presented to help you make the best possible decisions for yourself and the people you love.
As a morbidly obese person with a long history of struggles both physically and psychologically around food, weight & my health, I have never read a book or watched a docco on the topics covered in this book without feeling awful about myself at the end. Until now.

Engaging, eye-opening, informative
I think everyone should read/listen to this book to learn about obesity and understand the drivers and effects. Such an interesting, well presented collation of information. It felt like I read a meta-analysis, but it was as effortless to process as a novel.

Thought provoking
I listened to a podcast discussing this book. It interested me enough to buy the audio book. This book is very thought provoking, discussing many sides to the weight loss/obesity and processed food story. The author discusses results from many studies throughout the years and gives both sides of the weight loss medication argument. I highly recommend.
