About this listen

From the author of the New York Times bestselling King’s Dark Tidings series comes a prequel novel set in that world.

Wesson is still years from becoming a man when an immense darkness stirs within his core. The sinister power bursts free during a confrontation with an old enemy, and Wesson’s tranquil life is left in tatters.

Forced to flee a murderous mob, Wesson stumbles onto a tumultuous path where he must confront the destructive power he has awakened. He must learn control over the power he wields or risk being consumed by it. As he wrestles with his training, an assassin stalks his every move. This new enemy is sent by a mysterious foe, one who will force Wesson to choose between the kindness in his heart and the seductive power in his soul.

Mage of No Renown can be enjoyed as a standalone, but be warned: it will likely lead you into Free The Darkness.

A welcome return to form

Kel Kade’s King’s Dark Tidings series has always been one of my favourites. There’s just something charming about the world and characters.

With her other series, Shroud of Prophecy not quite hitting the mark, I’ve certainly been concerned with the future of KDT. Luckily it seems my concerns have been assuaged. Taking a break seems to have been the right move because Mage of No Renown is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. The passion is there.

One of the things that I’ve noticed about Kel Kade’s earlier instalments of KDT and this book was the pacing. The story moves from one scene to the next fluidly with little down time between them. This is very important and Kingdoms and Chaos was a good example of the pacing being ‘not quite right.’

It’s very nice to see the backstory that’s been hinted at for many years now, and if Dragons and Demons can match or exceed the quality of this prequel, I’m very excited.

Good work Kel! I’ll always keep reading your books even if I’m not a fan of some.

Old friends

Once again a well written book and masterful narration. My only complaint is that now I’m even MORE anxious to learn of Wessons fate in KDT5.

love the characters but seemed a bit rushed

big fan of king's dark tidings. thought overall the book was a lot of fun delving into one of the moreysterious characters but I think the pacing was a bit off. events that I thought were going to be a big deal didn't seem have a big effect on the story or me as a reader. it also seemed to give a lot of time to characters I didn't really care about, and not enough to the characters that were super interesting.

Would have loved to see more of the main story of king's dark tidings through the view of our favourite introverted (not) battle Mage.

great book all by itself

Its even better when you know how it ties into Rezkin's story. after this book you will have a fair bit more respect for the nerdy guy with a bit of destructive power.

Great back story

Excellent back story, filling in many untold stories about Wesson.
If you enjoyed the 'Kings Dark Tidings' series this is a great book for more of the story behind a sub-main character

Another sensational instalment of the Rezkin saga

The storyline and pace are incredible. As usual Nick Podehls performance was exceptional.
I find Kel Kades writing very refreshing, enough detail to spark the imagination and not so much to detract from the unfolding of the story. The characters unfold and develop in a very natural way.

Can't wait for Kings Tidings 5.

Didn’t expect to care, but ended up getting hooked

I love all of Kel Kade’s books. If you don’t, don’t listen to this one because it’s pretty on brand. I didn’t expect to care, though, about wessen and his story. I care much, much more about Rezkin and his story and how he navigates life with the restrictions of his rules.

Half way through Mage of No Renown though, I ended up hooked. Like I always do. It was great. It didn’t go how I thought, and I like that. It’s nothing too overly exciting, but the character of Wessen shines in the book and his plight is definitely well written.

In love with this world!

I’m so in love with the world the author has created. The narrator is incredible and his range of accents and ability to switch swiftly without fault allows you to be fully immersed.

great book ties in perfectly with king's dark

great prequel that fleshes out wessens backstory and sets up future interactions. I would recommend reading this after book 2 of king's dark tidings for it to fit into the series
