About this listen
ALAN RICKMAN was one of the world-class actors of his generation, as well as a tireless political activist, an avid traveller and a devoted confidant and friend. Through his never-before-seen diaries – a twenty-five-year passion project – Rickman invites readers backstage and into his life.
A SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
Alan Rickman remains one of the most beloved actors of all time across almost every genre, from his breakout role as Die Hard’s villainous Hans Gruber to his heart-wrenching run as Professor Severus Snape, and beyond. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate new audiences today. But Rickman’s artistry wasn’t confined to just his performances. Rickman’s writing details the extraordinary and the ordinary in a way that is anecdotal, indiscreet, witty, gossipy and utterly candid. He takes us behind the scenes on films and plays ranging from Sense & Sensibility, the Harry Potter series, Private Lives, My Name is Rachel Corrie and many more.
The diaries run from 1993 to his death in 2016 and offer insight into both a public and private life. Here is Rickman the consummate professional actor, but also the friend, the traveller, the fan, the director, the enthusiast: in short, the real Alan Rickman. Here is a life fully lived, all detailed in intimate and characteristically plain-spoken prose. Reading the diaries is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close friend.
Madly, Deeply also includes a foreword by Emma Thompson and a selection of Rickman’s early diaries, dating from 1974 to 1982, when his acting life first began.

I loved it.
This was a very interesting book/ diaries. He led a none stop life filled with some amazing people. He was very mindful of
his family and seemed always to have had time for them. A life well lived!

Deep and personal
There is lots of mixed reviews but what I can say is that its a read that is quite unique! It goes into Alan’s deep personal thoughts he had at behind the camera. it’s definitely a slow burn but worth it at the end. Very much enjoyed it

Disappointing
Alan Rickman was an extraordinary actor & by all accounts an intelligent man whose friends & colleagues found kind & delightful. It’s a pity then that the brief entries in his diary give little scope for displaying his charm & wit. Rickman had one of the richest voices on stage or screen & I wish this recording contained longer excerpts to enjoy its mellowness. But his diary was short on exposition & comprised pithy, sometimes witty comments on his day. I wanted more.

Diary entries left me wanting more
Was not a fan of the diary as it didn’t explain much to me; I wonder how much it was redacted. It was wonderful however to hear a life well lived and admire his “get on with it” spirit despite the health issues.

A life really lived
I really enjoyed the insights given in Alan’s personal diaries. The reader was very dry and, I felt, matched Alan’s sentiments. So sad his life was cut short.

I wept
It took me a while to get into the diary format. Initially it seemed rather dot point. But within an hour, I picked up the momentum and could piece together a more complex narrative. I wept at the end, even though I knew what was coming. I wept again hearing Alan’s gentle, carefully-worded voice.

An amazing life
I am not sure this is what Rickman would have planned for his diaries. If he had published them, I suspect he may have included more context and padding to help the reader follow the events. The book as it stands makes for an interesting read, with many intelligent observations and fascinating insights into the world of acting and directing, but it’s quite staccato and sometimes a bit hard to follow.

Incredibly dull, so disappointing
I have to imagine that this was written by someone tagging along on Alan's adventures, because accepting that this is his actual life is utterly depressing. All he does is complain about people, projects and situations. It's all wake up times, flights, restaurants, food and name dropping. There is little joy in what he does, and little affection shown towards his wife or friends. He doesn't seem to enjoy making movies at all, the only time he expresses delight is when watching others at the theatre. And he goes to a hell of a lot of funerals.
If you want insights into his films and costars or fun behind the scenes stories, you will not get them here.
