Publisher's Summary

All roads lead back home.

Billy Connolly may be a citizen of the world, but in his heart he's never been far from his homeland. Made in Scotland is Billy's unique and intimate portrait of his native Scotland, a love letter to the places and people that made him.

It's an adventure inspired by a single incident: the moment Billy received his Knighthood and was asked, 'How does it feel to have achieved all this when you came from nothing?' His response was, 'But I did come from something!' So begins an odyssey through the Highlands, the Lowlands and the Barrowlands on a shaggy dog quest to find out what that 'something' was and whether it is still there.

Far from a typical travelogue, Billy’s quest is as much through his memories and experiences as it is through his excursions, with a series of key artefacts prompting reminiscences - a first pressing of a Hank Williams album (the first record he ever owned), Landseer’s Monarch of the Glen, a bottle of air that re-creates the smell of the old Glasgow Docks - each of which inspire moments of reflection, joy, drama and laughter.

Accompanying a major BBC TV series, Made in Scotland is Billy Connolly's insightful, moving and very funny account of the stuff that really matters. Family, love, sex, health, football, fishing, work, art, swearing, banjos, friends, going to the pub. And good tea.

The Big Yin and his Life through his own words

Having been a fan of Billy Connolly for over 13 years now I thought I knew all there was to know. I have watched all his live performances and the documentaries he has made including Around The World Tour Series.
I have even read the two books written by his wife however listening to this book was different because instead of being told Billy like by someone else were getting told by the man himself.

I really enjoyed this book and well worth your time and like myself you may learn a thing or two you didn't know.

Made In Scotland

Loved this book and all Billy’s stories of the past as I was born in Paisley which he mentions on several occasions and his stories are similar to those that my mum used to tell also. Have always loved Billy. Such natural talent. I will read the book again for sure. I only wish Billy had narrates it himself but the narrator did well to be fair to him.

Great if you want to learn about Scotland

If you have Scottish family, or a fascination of Scotland, this is such a fun way to learn about it, and it’s appropriately read by a Scott. Very interesting historical information weaved into the life story and comedy.

Brilliantly Billy!

This is a fascinating and, of course, immensely funny look at Billy’s life and connection to his homeland. Although slightly disappointing that Connolly was not up to reading it, Gordon Kennedy’s narration is so good there are times you forget it’s not the Big Yin himself. Billy really opens up in his usual fashion which is to say his honesty and frankness about himself and his life is so refreshing compared to some of the more guarded autobiographies I’ve read. This is a must read (listen!) for anyone who has ever had their funny bone tickled by one of the best comedians the world has ever known.

A great yarn

Billy’s take on the world is enlightening and so hilariously told. While I don’t agree politically with him you just know he has a heart of gold and wants the best for everyone and to see them laughing and happy. This book will brighten up your day! I know a lot more about the real Scotland from this book too.

A Glasgow Straight Shooter

It contains some memorable anecdotes and some straight shooting opinions. His working-class upbringing is something he is proud of and his development as a comedian from a folk musician is very well described.
