Publisher's Summary

M.I.S.S.I.S.S.I.P.P.I. is an open letter from the perspective of a native Mississippian departing from my home state for graduate school and to pursue a career in corporate America. In the midst of this, I took it upon myself to read about African American history through the means of autobiographies of iconic men and women in Black history. In my readings, I realized I was learning more about my home state than I did when I was living there. In addition, my encounters with people all over the world had a perspective of Mississippi that was heavily influenced by media outlets that didn't capture the full essence of what it really is like living in the state I grew up in.

This open letter is a child writing to its mother from afar expressing emotions untapped until becoming more knowledgeable of its mother as an adult. Whereas the child is the native Mississippian and the mother is the state itself.
